Profile
Care: Easy
Origin: South America
Size: 3.3cm (1.3inches)
pH: 6-8
dH: 5-12
Temp: 24-30*C (75-86F)
Tank Size: 20L (5 gallon) but 50L (13 gallon) is recommended
Food: Flakes, pellets, frozen, live and boiled zucchini (and other vegetables)
Lifespan: 2-4 years
Breeding (how to set-up a breeding tank)
Sexing: it is extremely hard to differentiate the sexes, males are thinner whilst females a plumper.
Despite being prolific these fish are still moderately hard to breed. To promote spawning they should be fed live food for a couple of weeks. To decrease the fry morality rate the breeding pair should be moved into a breeding tank which has Java Moss in it. The tank should either have a) no lighting or b) weak and subdued lighting. The tank should be kept in between 26 and 28*C (79-82.5) and slightly acidic. The fry take around 20 hours to hatch and can be fed paramecium culture, rotifers, finely ground flakes or infursoria. After four days feed the fry baby brine shrimp. When you think they are big enough feed them adult brine shrimp and microworms.
