Terms YOU must know
Fry: a baby fish
Hardness: Water hardness is a measurement of the amount dissolved calcium and magnesium salts. These minerals generally enter the water through weathering rocks. Certain fish die when the hardness gets to high whilst others need a higher hardness to survive.
Hardy: when a fish is quite tough and can handle harsh conditions. e.g. goldfish are very hardy and can live in ponds that reach -1C (30F).
Infursoria: near microscopic creatures that are often fed to fry.
Paramecium culture: near microscopic creatures that are often fed to fry.
pH: a unit of measurement used to determine the extent of acidity or alkalinity of water. This is important in an aquarium because fish are quite sensitive and can die from pH fluctuations. pH is measured on a scale of 0 to 14 where 0 is extremely acidic, 7 is neutral, and 14 is extremely alkaline. Most fish tend to strive in pH levels of around 2 units above or below 7.
Rotifers: near microscopic creatures that are often fed to fry.
Spawn: when a female fish and male fish get together and the female fish lays eggs whilst the male fertilises them.
Spirulina: a microscopic algae that is highly nutritious and can be fed to fully grown fish and fry.
Substrate: the material on the bottom of a tank. Usually gravel or pebbles.
