Planted Tank (Aquascaping)
As can be seen in the pictures below, aquascaping is the art of placing aquatic plants, driftwood and rocks (or other natural materials) in strategic locations to create a scenic aquarium. Some aquascapes are made to resemble certain landscapes, for example the first picture looks like a Brazilian jungle whereas the second picture looks like the Scottish highlands. Fish are not always necessary in aquascapes but they help to bring life to it, especially iridescent fish like neon's or discus. Aquascaping has become a popular hobby in conjunction with fish keeping and their are many aquascaping contest that take place around the world. Public aquarium are even starting to show aquascapes now.
A planted tank is similar to an aquascape but varies on one main concept. Planted tanks focus more on the fish inside the tank whilst an aquascape focuses more on the variety of plants in the tank. Moreover, aquascapes are more densely planted whilst a planted tank might have just one plant variety in it that only occupies a small portion of the tank.
Aquascaping is high maintenance and often require carbon dioxide injection, appropriate lighting, specific substrate and plant fertilisers. Sometimes algae control also becomes an issue.
