Guppies
Copyright My Aquarium Petz
Guppies one of the most popular choice for the freshwater aquarium. Why? Well simply because of it beauty and the fact that it is easy to care for. They are relatively small with a size reaching 3-6 cm (1-2.3 in) fully grown. These fish are very social and like to be kept in schools of about 3 or more. It is best to feed them either 1 or 2 times daily.
Profile
Care: Beginner
pH: 6.8 and 7.6
Food: flakes, spirulina, lettuce, blood-worms, spinach, freeze dried foods and mosquito larvae.
Tank Size: no less than 20L (5 gallon) for a trio. 40L for about 10-15 guppies.
Cost: ranges from $2-$5
Life span: 1-2 years
Temperature: 19-29*C (66-84*F)
SEXING: Males are more colorful and smaller than females which are dull and plumper.
BREEDING:These fish breed like rabbits and you will have more than you expected in no time. Guppies are live bearers; this means they give birth to live young (like humans) instead of eggs. If your on a budget and want to breed them then purchase a trio. A trio consists of 2 female and 1 male and provides the perfect ration for reproduction. This is because if you get 1 male and 1 female the female gets constantly harassed by the male, so if there are two then the male will be chasing both of them and consequently the harassment will be reduced on both of them. Once a female is pregnant it will take about 30 days until she releases her fry (baby guppies). She will release between 5 to 30 fry.
Providing fake/real plants, ornament or driftwood is a key to raising fry. This allows them to hide from their parents, who sometimes get eaten by their parents.
These are similar but not related to Enlder Livebearers. Make sure to check them out!
